The Kids on the Block eBook Mario C Chavez Ray Arroyo Zarco Guerrero Joan R Neubauer Reviews
"The Kids on the Block" is a humorous gaze into the 'Rites-of-passage' as Soapsuds and his unique friends make their way from adolescents to adults. Though the banter is light-hearted, the author is not afraid to touch on serious issues such as death, abuse, hunger, suicide, and other life struggles. I found "The Kids on the Block" to be a delightful, charming and entertaining read!

The first thing that grabbed my attention about Mario Chavez's book "The Kids on the Block" was the cover. Not often do you see pictures of skeletons and children on the same book cover. Curious as to why he chose this particular art, I opened the book and learned why. Skulls, or "Calacas," Chavez explains, are a symbolic representation of the faces of our life--sad, happy, and tragic--in our journey from childhood to adulthood, and from life to death.
"The Kids on the Block" indeed takes us on that journey with a delightful mix of characters starting with the storyteller, a boy nicknamed Soapsuds, and his friends with equally interesting nicknames.
We see the world through the eyes of children, and wonder how our children survive as healthy as they do. For in the midst of childhood, our children witness tragedy but are so often not privy to the whys, and wherefores and are instead, shut off from those things adult decide are too unpleasant for children to face, or are too difficult for them to explain. Chavez does not blink when he writes of life and its tragedies. Instead, he takes us inside the mind of a child and shows us, through their eyes, what the tragedy looks like to an outsider--for all too often, during a tragedy; our children are treated as outsiders looking in.
I laughed with Soapsuds and his hearty crew of friends, and cheered the one lone girl called Cha Cha, who held her own and taught the boys a lesson or two. I fell in love with the Comadres and the Compadres who added so much color to the lives of the kids on the block. Then, before we know it, the kids are grown, and have their own joys, tragedies, and triumphs. Soapsuds takes us full-circle when he learns the universality of it all.
Chavez surely drew from his own childhood as he painted such believable characters.
The Kids on the Block is a gripping and undeniably compelling story that will ignite genuine laughter, crocodile tears and a flood of your own childhood memories. Relatable and vivid character depictions will cause you to tap into your own formative years and the bonds you shaped while growing up on your own block. Reading The Kids on The Block is tantamount to stepping into a magnificent time machine that takes you on an uplifting and enriching journey, at the outset, peering into the lives of adolescents bonding on the block, and then following them into adulthood.
The memorable experiences spotlight both good and carefree times -as well as heartbreaking events. As you become immersed in the lives of these characters, you can't help but conjure up your own emotional recollections of youth. The Kids on The Block is a thoroughly captivating, entertaining and thought provoking saga -one you will be glad you read, and one you won't soon forget.
There's a little something for everyone in THE KIDS ON THE BLOCK, an enjoyable new book by author Mario Chavez. Tracing the lives of the "kids," Chavez recaptures youth in a way few can as seen through the eyes of memorable characters like Casper, Guero Flu, Horns, Soapsuds, and even La Plaga. No matter which character you identify with most, don't be surprised if you find yourself lost in your own childhood memories. It's difficult not to laugh and tear up while reading about life on the block, as author Chavez illuminates how those early relationships and experiences bind us regardless of the years that fly by all too quickly, and the various paths we inevitably take in life.
